PAT MARX: MASTER PASTELIST
The two environments I work from most often are very different. Miami, Florida has been my home for almost thirty years and we have a second home in Chatham, on Cape Cod. We're very fortunate because we feel we have the best of both worlds. The colors, light and atmosphere are unique to each location. The ocean is a major presence in both locales, but the local colors are profoundly distinctive. The cold icy blue of the north Atlantic is a contrast to the warm, azure blue and the palm trees of the south. It is these two locations where I find my inspiration to create and give life to my work. My paintings are evocative of dream like dunes, cliffs, sea and landscapes. Ultimately I'm interested in drawing the viewer into the texture depth, detail, and lush colors rather than eliciting a direct interpretation to a scene. I find abstraction and non-representational work to be challenging and stimulating since it's not trying to portray or copy nature directly but rather capture the feeling of a sense of place or time.
ABOUT PAT
As Director of Education and Community Outreach for Metropolitan Dade County’s (Miami, Florida) nationally recognized Art in Public Places program, Pat Ross Marx developed community education programming through collaborative activities with community and educational agencies. She also developed important public information and educational materials, such as the Art in Public Places Newsletter, published Metro-Dade Art in Public Places Teacher Learning Package and was the production advisor for an award winning video Metro-Dade Art in Public Places. Through grants she completed the production of an interactive videodisc and CD ROM program entitled Art in Public Places featuring Trackers of the Lost Art to be distributed to Dade County Public Schools and Miami-Dade Community College. Marx was an active speaker and panelist at conferences and professional meetings.
In 1992 she received the Sarah T. Maddox Award, the highest honor from the Dade County Art Education Association and the 1996 Art Educator of the Year Award from the Children’s Cultural Coalition, Inc.
Formerly an Adjunct Instructor in the Art Education Department at Florida International University, she has also taught art to children and adults in public schools, museums, galleries and workshops. For seven years in the 80’s Marx was the Volunteer Coordinator of the Baptist Hospital of Miami Artist Showcase, a quality outdoor art show with approximately 200 exhibiting artists. Marx received her B.S. degree from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo and her Masters in Art Education from Florida International University.
Prior to living in Florida, Marx taught art at the prestigious Creative Workshop at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and exhibited numerous times in Rochester, New York, including the important Finger Lakes Show. She is in the permanent collection at Strong Memorial Hospital and the former St. Bernard’s Seminary in Rochester, New York and Crippled Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as many private collections.
Marx has lived part time in Chatham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod and studied pastels extensively. She is represented by the Nickerson Art Gallery there. She feels pastels are the perfect medium for expressing the northern beauty of Cape Cod and the tropical lushness of Miami. Her abstract work reflects elements of both.
She has been awarded numerous awards for her artwork and was recently titled "Master Pastelist" by the Pastel Society of America. She also has signature status in the Pastel Painter’s Society of Cape Cod as well as the Pastel Society of America. Marx has been published in the Pastel Journal 100 Competition ( April 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013) and featured in the on-line magazine Create Better Paintings (January 2009).
Marx has formed The Ross Group, Inc., a consulting art organization.
